We have had a very busy start to Spring with a huge increase in orders and both Palmers and Oderings stores coming on board with selected products from our range.
At home, the first of our crops propagated last month in the greenhouse have been put into our garden beds, and the kids have been busy planting more seeds into our pre-loaded trays (on special), which we then cover with plastic until they germinate.
This season we are using the EcoFelt Grow Bags for our seasonally perennials and vegetables, such as tomatoes and lettuces. These eco-friendly and re-usable bags grow better plants due to their excellent root zone aeration and drainage. The best advantage to our bags is that once the roots go through the fabric they stop growing, this is called Air Pruning, and this stimulates root branching creating more and finer root growth. It's the fine roots that absorb water and nutrients the best. Lightweight with handles they will come in handy as we can relocate them by the kitchen deck when we need to start picking.

September is Bee Aware month.
One mouthful in three and nearly ¾ of the diversity of our daily food is directly attributed to Bee pollination. Honey bees all around the world are in decline because of Varroa mite infestations and other threats. Pesticide misuse is killing bees. Habitat degradation takes away flowers which supply nectar and pollen, their essential food. Bees are now dependent on humans to protect them.
Now is a great time to help our bees by using our propagators to seed beautiful flowers rich in Nectar. We recommend Kings Seeds 'Bring on the Bees' which is a selection of 5 bee plant varieties (Anise Hyssop, Bergamot Bee Balm, Borage, Echium Blue Bedder and Phacelia Lacy).
Bee Friendly with Diatomaceous Earth
Did you know that our DEBug Insect Dust, made from 100% Natural Organic Diatomaceous Earth is a bee friendly product?
When DE is applied to crops or orchards, the honey bee tends to protect themselves by simply avoiding those blossoms already treated with DE. However, if DE does get on a bee’s body, it is covered with slick hairs that are able to help prevent dehydration of body fluids. However we would recommend the following pre-cautions.... If you can, avoid using it on or near blossoms or where you know where the bees are headed. Give’em a break. Also, apply, be it spray or broadcast, when bees aren’t active. This means applying in the evening as bees move back to the hive for the night. Some sources suggest that morning is fine, too, and preferable because it will utilise the morning dew to capture the DE.
DEBug is now also available at Palmers and Palmers Planet stores.
Note: We also have Raw Diatomaceous Earth in stock to use as a Health and Feed Supplement (for consumption), in jars and bags.
