We have had some amazing frosts already... winter has definitely arrived at home. The last of the vege's have been picked by the kids and fallen fruit off our trees has been preserved to store in the pantry (or made into fruit pies and frozen).
Over the long weekend the kids brought our herbs (grown in Fertilpots) inside. They now sit in some lovely decorative metal pots from www.growgifts.co.nz and take pride of place on our windowsill.
We have started planning our food forest and have already done some underplanting with rhubarb and a new grape vine. For new plantings we are using clouches to protect them while they establish from the cold.
We recently donated to www.growfoodinstead.co.nz who educate youth about organic growing based on permaculture principles. We will soon receive a 'reward' for an onsite consultation, analysis and concept design for our food forest, so we can start another round of propagating before the spring season.
Happy gardening, Monique & Warren
BIOCHAR COMPOUND FERTILISER
A unique 3 in 1 product, ideal for planting of new trees and shrubs over the winter months.
The major components include organic Bamboo Biochar, 25% N+P+K slow release fertiliser and beneficial Soil Microorganisms (20 million/g). This combination of ingredients is in line with the demand for early crop nutrient demand. The Biochar improves the soil, sustains the release of inorganic nutrients, improves the efficiency of fertiliser and provides a stable environment for the growth of microorganisms, all greatly improving the amount of soil bacteria. The microorganisms activate inorganic nutrients in the soil, improving efficiency of fertiliser.
Used as a base or dressing fertiliser for all plants, slow release granule form for easy application.

Last month we welcomed Duncan to Biogrow.
He comes to us with a wealth of knowledge in sales and marketing and is now the main contact for our retailers as well as helping to develop new promotions for our growing product ranges, so exciting times ahead.
We still consider him to be a 'newbie' to gardening, but he is becoming a fast convert. Much to his families dismay, he has started detouring them to the gardening section of all the local shops. Duncan is already promoting to retailers, providing education and getting his hands dirty... literally.
Photo (on right) from our recent Biogro Organics seminar at Palmers Bethlehem, attended by 150+ people. The main topic around the history, uses and application of DEBug Diatomaceous Earth and BioChar Organic Fertiliser - which they sold out of the following week, well done Duncan!.
Biochar for Tree PlantingClick to enlarge
In conjunction with the tree planting kit(that is on special this month online and in selected garden centres), we have been researching the benefits of planting your young trees with added Biochar to the surrounding soils. We have found many pages and documents, but have summarised the best highlights below...
Tree research beginning.
The excitement over Biochar has made it seem larger than life. This enthusiasm is supported by extensive research into Biochar’s effects on agricultural soils and crops. But, there has not been such research looking at Biochar with trees and shrubs until the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories and The Morton Arboretum undertook a major study in 2013. The research involved well over a dozen studies, looking at Biochar as a mulch, soil amendment and as backfill, and includes greenhouse, nursery, field plot and street settings.
The upshot of the findings so far is that biochar can have a measurable positive impact on soil quality and plant growth. So much so that researchers now sell Biochar for use on their client properties!.
The main benefits they found where:
A synergy exists between compost and biochar. When biochar and compost are combined, trees and shrubs show greater growth and performance than with either of the two amendments alone.
Less is more. The research shows that a little bit goes a long way, which certainly has an added cost benefit. The 'sweet spot' appears to be five percent biochar by volume (but less may be effective)
Moisture retention. The increase in soil moisture was statistically significant.
Disease resistance. Tree seedlings of two species potted in soil with Biochar had less extensive cankering from disease. Along several measures, the plants growing in Biochar performed equally to plants that were chemically treated with standard products.
Increased plant growth. In an 18-month nursery study they found significantly more root growth and increased soil organic matter.
