Finally daylight savings has arrived and we are getting a chance to get out in the evenings and tend to all our lovely Fertilpot seedlings that we are already starting to plant out.
We have our first 'batch' happily growing in our garden beds with more being propagated.
We have been using the 6x6cm pots in 28 cell trays, planting four of each of our favourite vege's every two weeks. With these seedlings maturing at different times we can plant throughout the season ensuring a continuous (and not to bountiful) supply over summer.
Read on for a great school holiday planting project and our guide for plants to propagate in October.
Happy gardening, Warren & Monique
New Organic Certification
After a very long process (almost four months), our DEBug Diatomaceous Earth has finally gained BioGro Organic Certification here in New Zealand. It has been through very complex procedures and audits and is now registered as under the following three categories.
Plant & Crop Nutrition
Crop Management (domestic use only)
The Crop Managment registration is the first ever done on any Diatomaceous Earth product in New Zealand, and means that DEBug is the ONLY Fresh water, Food grade DE to be registered as an organic insecticide for your garden.
DEBug Diatomaceous Earth is available bagged, or in 200g and 400g bottles that come with their own applicator nozzle, so no need to buy accessories. Once empty you can buy a 500g refill bag and use your bottle again.
For more advantageous of DE please follow this link.
This Months Special
To celebrate DEBug's new organic registration in New Zealand, we are offering a
Off the retail price of our bottles, to make way for new BioGro labelled stock.
Diatomite is used as an insecticide, due to its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons. By cracking open their joints and by rubbing holes through their outer shells the bugs die quickly, since the holes let air in and let out moisture from the insects’ bodies causing them to dehydrate. As this process is mechanical, there is no plant or livestock with-holding period for human consumption.

School Holiday Pot Paint, Plant & Propagate
Want an idea to occupy your kids these October holidays and tired of using old icecream sticks to label your potted seedlings?
Did you know that because our Fertilpots are made from wood fibres they can be decorated?
Why not get the kids to use their non-toxic paints or felt markers to decorate your pots. They can draw on pictures of strawberries, beans, whatever you are planting or just get creative with bold and exciting designs. Planted pots are also a great gift idea and your seedlings should mature in time for a Christmas planting. (Pictured are 10cm Fertilpots painted by children at the Tauranga Envirofest)
Propagating in October
Below is a list of common vegetables that are ideal to propagate into Fertilpots this month.
All these seedlings should mature for planting within 4-6 weeks (or when the roots start to penetrate the pot). Remember that if your like us, and shortly after planting you decide to move your seedling to another position in the garden, you can dig up your Fertilpot and move with no loss of soil or damage to the roots.
We are currently looking for retailers through-out the country to stock our range of Fertilpots, Peat Pellets, DEBug Diatomaceous Earth, Slug Gone Wool Pellets, Wool BioMats, etc. So if you have a local garden centre looking for some unique new products, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can get in touch.
We are also looking for people who might want to sell our products at their local town markets.
